Ambush Map

This is the 8th mission of Myth: The Fallen Lords. After snow seals the passes at Bagrada and Seven Gates, a force of about a hundred soulless are wandering behind your lines, cut off from the rest of their army. Grab your satchels, kids... it's time for some dwarf target practice!
Your team of 13 dwarves and 7 berserks start on the frozen surface of a lake, setting up satchel charges for the ambush while your dwarven scout lures the soulless towards you. This means you don't have much time, so make your presets fast and run. A couple of your dwarves will start automatically laying out satchel charges on the ice; stop them and pick the charges back up. If you stay to fight them on the lake, you'll be easily outflanked by the dozens of oncoming soulless. As with all ambushes in Myth, you'll fight better if you've got the high ground.

Here's the high ground in question -- a rocky outcropping just north of the lake, with two snowy slopes leading to the top. Get your dwarves up the hill fast and split them into two groups, one guarding each slope, as shown in the picture to the left. You can put the berserks wherever you like, or not even bring them up the hill at all, since the quarters are too close up here for your berserks to fight alongside your dwarves. Be VERY careful about troop arrangements in this level... friendly fire will kill you way faster than the soulless' javelins if your dwarves get careless.

The soulless will attack in 3 waves: 2 smaller ones of about 10 each, and a big one of at least several dozen. Needless to say, it helps to finish off the first two waves quickly so you have more time to prepare for the big onslaught.

Use your brief breathing spaces to set up minefields on both slopes of the hill. Try to space your mines fairly widely to get as many soulless as possible, but make sure that they're close enough to all go off in a chain reaction. Properly set minefields will make or break this level for you, so lay them liberally and carefully. It really helps if you make a little trailing "fuse" of charges leading to the rest of the minefield, so that your dwarves can set it off from much further back (see the pictures for examples).

You may as well use your berserks to kill off the first wave of soulless as they chase after your scout... once the soulless start pouring in, they won't be as useful. Don't worry about getting your veterans killed, as you don't carry any of them over to the next level.

Killing the second wave is more fun. There's a big cache of extra satchel charges on the west shore of the lake, but your main force of dwarves should be carrying more than enough satchels already. However, if your scout survives his run-in with the soulless, he can dash over here and fill his greedy little pockets until he's a walking bomb. He's expendable, so have a little fun... blow as many soulless to pieces as you can with him before rushing in with your remaining berserks. Even if you don't get all of the second wave, don't worry -- you only have to kill about 60 of the soulless to achieve the level objectives.

If the main force of soulless hasn't shown up by the time you're ready for them, send a berserk or two down the left slope onto the ice to lure them in. Keep a FIRM grip on your dwarves... one automatically-thrown molotov cocktail can set off the whole trap before the minefield is crowded enough. Wait until the horde looks like a swarm of angry bees on top of the minefield, then let fly. The following sequence of pictures should illustrate this in a most... satisfying fashion. Once you've killed enough of the little buggers, Your dwarves will start cheering and you can start breathing again. Good job!
